Notched collar shirtdress

Toen ik toch eenmaal de camera tevoorschijn had getoverd heb ik ook deze jurk meteen maar even op de foto gezet. Daarvoor moest ik m eerst uit de vieze was~~mand~~ bult halen. Vandaar de kreukels 🙂

While I had the camera out I used the opportunity to also photograph this dress. To do that I had to get it out of the laundry ~~basket~~ pile. Hence the wrinkles 🙂

Het is een zelfgetekend patroon met een eenvoudige reverskraag en een klokkende rok met plooien in het voorpand. De stof is een kantoen/linnen mix en draagt heerlijk luchtig maar kreukelt ook als een malle.

It’s a self-drafted pattern with a simple notched collar and a flared skirt with pleats in the front. The fabric is a cotton/linen mix which is lovely to wear but also very prone to wrinkling.

Je ziet de kraag bijna niet door het printje. De knopen zijn mega-standaard, ze komen van de AH 😂 maar die passen dus echt overal bij he?

You can hardly see the collar because of the print. The buttons are super standard buttons, I bought them in the non-food section of the supermarket 😂 they do go with basically every fabric though!

De plooien zie je ook bijna niet. Aan beide kanten zit er eentje recht onder de coupenaad en nog eentje in het midden tussen de coupenaad en de zijnaad. De bovenste 10 cm is dichtgestikt, dat vind ik mooier vallen en het is makkelijker met strijken.

The pleats on the skirt are also hard to see. There are two on both sides: one right below the waist dart and one in the middle between the waist dart and the side seam. They are stitched down at the top 10 cm, because I think it makes them hang better and it’s easier to iron.

De pasvorm in de taille was nog wel even een dingetje. Sinds vorig jaar zomer heb ik een nieuwe hobby: klimmen (en boulderen). Naast dat het hartstikke leuk is, word je er ook hartstikke sterk van. Vooral in je armen natuurlijk, maar ook je (boven)rug-, borst- en buikspieren worden sterker. En groter. En dan verandert ook de vorm van je lijf. En dat vind ik toch wel een beetje ingewikkeld. Want ondanks dat het functioneel gezien heel handig is en en fijn voelt om sterk te zijn (ik heb voor het eerst in mijn leven spierballen!), vind ik het qua looks niet echt een verbetering. En uiteraard vind ik er vervolgens weer iets van dat ik dat vind, want het zou niet moeten uitmaken. Maar ik heb er vroeger jaren over gedaan om vrienden te worden met mijn lijf en hoe dat eruitziet, en nu is dat ineens niet meer vanzelfsprekend maar moet ik er weer meer mijn best voor doen. Dat is niet leuk. Het is ook geen ramp, de aanleiding is niet eens iets dat buiten mijn invloedssfeer ligt en uiteraard zijn er veel ergere dingen op de wereld, maar toch.

Goed, terug naar de taille. Omdat mijn taille-omvang wat is toegenomen wist ik niet zo goed hoe wijd ik de taille moest maken. Resultaat: te wijd. Uiteindelijk heb ik in de naadtoeslag van de taille en tunneltje gemaakt voor een smal elastiek zodat ‘ie wat aansluitender is.

The fit at the waist was a tale in itself. Since last summer I have a new hobby: sport climbing and bouldering. Besides the fact that it’s really fun, it also makes you really strong. Especially in the arms of course, but also in the (upper) back, bust and core. And those muscles also grow. And then the shape of your body changes. And that’s where it gets a bit complicated. Because while it feels good to be strong, I’m not neccesarily a fan of the look of it. And obviously I have feelings about how I feel about that, because it shouldn’t matter. But when I was younger, it took me years to get comfortable in my own skin, and for some years body issues seemed like a thing of the past. And now suddenly I have to work again to keep it that way and I don’t like it. It’s not a disaster, it’s even caused by something that I chose to do and enjoy, and obviously there are way worse things in the world, but still. Not fun.

Ok, back to the waist. Because my waist circumference has grown, I didn’t know how wide to make it. It turned out too big, but I used the seam allowance to create a casing for a small elastic and now it’s perfect.

Omdat de knoopjes niet doorlopen op de rok zit er een blinde rits in de taille. In de naailes vorig jaar leerden we de truc om die perfect te krijgen: hem eerst met een rijgdraadje even vast zetten. Voordat ik die opleiding deed dacht ik dat rijgen bedacht was om je leven ingewikkelder te maken en ervoor te zorgen dat je naaiprojecten alleen maar langer duren, maar dat is dus niet zo. Het werkt echt 🙂 wie had dat gedacht…. haha

Because the button placket doesn’t extend to the skirt, I put an invisible zipper in the side seam. At sewing school last year we were taught how to get those perfect: by hand-basting them first. Before I started that education I thought hand basting was invented to make life harder or make your sewing project take way longer. But as it turns out, it just makes the sewing easier and you garments look better 🙂 Who would’ve known…. haha

Als uitsmijter nog een kleine tip: doe niet je schoenen aan voor de camera als je je afstandsbediening nog in de hand hebt 😁

And finally, a pro tip: don’t put on your shoes while holding the camera remote 😁

Ehm.. hoi! Ik leef nog 😂
Het is echt een hele poos geleden dat hier een post verscheen. Ik moet zeggen dat ik ook niet kan garanderen dat dat nog heel vaak gaat gebeuren 🙈 Bloggen is best veel werk: foto’s maken, een beetje fatsoeneren, post schrijven… Lange tijd had ik daar niet zoveel zin in. Vooral het foto’s maken, dat voelde opeens een beetje maf, en nog steeds. Daarnaast heb ik het idee dat ik steeds hetzelfde typte: dit maakte ik, hier ben ik blij mee, hier wat minder, hoera weer een nieuw kledingstuk. De glans was er wat vanaf. Maar goed, ik heb nu twee jurken gemaakt waar ik zó blij mee ben dat ik de blogstilte ervoor doorbreek, haha.

Well… hello! I’m still alive 😂
It’s been quite a while since I posted something. And I must say, I can’t guarantee it’ll happen a lot again 🙈 Blogging is quite a bit of work: taking pictures, editing them so they look presentable, writing… For a long time I didn’t feel like it. Especially the picture taking bit, which suddenly felt awkward and still does. Besides that I feel like I keep on saying the same things: hey, here’s something I made, this is what I like, this is what I like less and hurray, a new garment. The shine was gone. But hey, I now made two dresses that I like so much, I’m breaking the blogsilence, haha.

Dit is nummer 1. Het is een beetje van de Sew over it Eve dress en een beetje van mezelf. De Eve dress heeft ook een versie met vlindermouwtjes en die maakte ik al twee keer. De versie met een gewone mouw wilde ik ook altijd nog een keertje maken, maar het armsgat was voor mij niet een goede vorm. Dat is bij zo’n vlindermouwtje niet zo’n probleem, want dat past wel. Maar bij een gewone mouw is dat toch anders, en ik ben nogal pietluttig als het gaat om de pasvorm in het schouder-en-arm gebied… De mouw zelf was ook een probleem, want de mouw was inclusief naadtoeslag smaller dan de omtrek van mijn bovenarm 💪 En dus zat er maar één ding op: het bovenlijfje en mouw zelf tekenen en de rok van het patroon gebruiken.

This is the first one. It’s a little bit of the Sew over it Eve dress and a little bit of me. The Eve dress also has a version with flutter sleeves. I made that one twice, but also wanted to make the regular sleeved version. The armhole as drafted was not a good shape for me, and I’m kind of nitpicky when it comes to shoulder and armhole fit. Also, the sleeve was problematic: the sleeve width, including seam allowances, was smaller than my bicep circumference 💪 So there really was only one thing to do: drafting the bodice and sleeves myself and using the skirt pattern piece.

En omdat je dan toch bezig bent kun je ook nog wat kleine andere aanpassingen aanbrengen 🙂 de schouderpas is iets lager dan op het originele patroon, dat vind ik mooier. En mijn versie heeft een coupenaad, voor een goede pasvorm.

So while you’re at it you can also add some slight improvements 🙂 the shoulder yoke ends a bit lower than in the original pattern, because I think it looks better. Also my version has a bust dart for a good fit.

Behalve dat is het ontwerp eigenlijk hetzelfde. Ik maakte de high-low rok omdat ik die het mooiste vind. Het is misschien niet de meest flatteuze lengte voor mijn kuiten maar het voelt zo fijn, die wapperende stof als ik loop.

Other than that the design is basically the same. I used the high-low skirt. It may not be the most flattering length on my calves but I looove the feeling of the swishy fabric when walking.

Deze versie in zwarte chiffon crèpe was eigenlijk de testversie, maar zoals je kan zien hoefde er weinig aan aangepast te worden. het enige dat ik veranderde was de vorm van de halslijn, die heb ik een half centimetertje uitgediept ter hoogte van de pas. Ik moet zeggen dat ik met deze versie minstens zo blij ben als met de definitieve, het is een hele comfortabele jurk en ik voel me vrij sjiek en elegant als ik ‘m aan heb.

This black chiffon crèpe version was actually a wearable muslin but as you can see there was no need for adjustments. The only one I made was widening the neckline with like a half centimetre at the yoke. I must say, I’m as happy with this one as I am with the final dress, it’s comfy and makes me feel chique and elegant and confident when I wear it.

En dit is dan de ‘definitieve’ versie! Deze stof is wat zwaarder, een gewone crèpe, waardoor de rimpels bij de pas wat anders vallen. Ik ben er super blij mee! Ik vind de stof zo gaaf, de kleuren, de print… Het enige nadeel is dat de stof aan de achterkant wit(tig) is en dat je dat een beetje ziet door de high-low rok maar ja, je kan niet alles hebben en ik denk dat het niet heel erg opvalt.

So here it is, the final dress! The fabric is a bit heavier, a regular crèpe, which makes the gathers at the shoulder yoke look a bit different. I’m super happy with it! I love the fabric, the colour, the print… The only downside is that it’s white(ish) on the wrong side and it shows a little because of the high-low hem. But oh well, you can’t win them all and I don’t think it’s that obvious in real life.

Dat was eigenlijk alles wel wat ik te vertellen heb 🙂 Hoera voor twee toffe nieuwe jurken, én driewerf hoera voor patroontekenen! Want iets precies zó maken als dat je in gedachten had, dat is toch wel super tof.

So that was all I have to say about it 🙂 Hurray for two fabulous new dresses and three cheers for pattern drafting! Because making something exactly like you had in mind, that’s awesome.

40’s inspired shirtdress

Na de jurken met elastieken taille bedacht ik dat ik ook nog wel eens een op de jaren ’40 geïnspireerde shirtdress wilde maken. De overwijdte van die jurken met elastiek leek me daar wel voor geschikt, en dus ging ik nog een keer met die grondvorm aan de slag.

After the elastic waist dresses I realised that I wanted to make a shirtdress inspired by the ones from the 40’s. The ease in the bodice of the elastic waist dresses seemed perfect for that too and so I used the bodice block of those again.

De eerste poging van de kraag die ik tekende vond ik niet zo’n succes. Te hooggesloten en de rechte hoek die erin zat was lastig te naaien. Maar het mooie van zelf maken is dat je dan gewoon een stukje extra stof kunt bestellen en opnieuw kunt beginnen, is het niet? Bijkomend voordeel dat de stof maar € 2,00 per meter was 🙂

The first iteration of the collar was not what I wanted. Too high and there was a straight corner in the pattern which was hard to sew. But the beauty of sewing is that you can just order some more fabric and start again. And when your fabric is only € 2,00 a metre it’s even better 🙂

De tweede kraag vind ik een stuk beter gelukt. Het patroon heeft in plaats van coupenaden rimpels, en pasjes op de schouders. De rug heeft ook een pas. Het bovenlijfje is ietsjes langer zodat het bloest. Verder is de rok iets uitgeklokt maar niet heel veel, en hij heeft deelnaden. Het riempje maakte ik ook zelf, de eerste keer. De knoopjes komen van de Albert Heijn of all places, maar op een of andere manier passen ze perfect bij de jurk.

The second collar is much more to my liking. The pattern has gathers instead of darts, small yokes at the shoulders and a yoke at the back. The bodice has a bit of excess length so it blouses slightly. The skirt has a slight flare and princess seams. I also made the belt, my first ever. The buttons are from the supermarket of all places, but somehow they are perfect for this dress.

De stof draagt heel fijn, maar zo op de foto zie je er wel elke kreukel in. In het echt is dat wat minder duidelijk. Dit was eigenlijk een proefmodel, voor de ‘real deal’ heb ik een hele mooie oranjerode linnen stof liggen. Bij dat exemplaar maak ik de schouders ietsje smaller denk ik, want ze lijken hier een beetje breed.

The fabric is lovely to wear but it shows every wrinkle. In real life it’s not as obvious though. This is actually a muslin, I have a beautiful orange/red linnen for the ‘real’ dress. I think I’ll narrow the shoulders a bit on that one as they look a bit wide here.

Verder heb ik niet zo veel te vertellen over deze jurk geloof ik 🙂 het is wel een bewerkelijk patroon maar uiteindelijk is ‘ie precies zo geworden als dat ik in mijn hoofd had, hoera!

There’s not much more to tell I guess 🙂 It’s a laborious pattern but it turned out exactly as I envisioned, so that’s worth a little happy dance right?

Dat is een tijdje geleden 🙂 Laat ik het zo zeggen: een drukke baan en een costumière-opleiding combineren laat niet zoveel tijd over voor voor-jezelf-naaien en bloggen. Maar vandaag heb ik eindelijk weer eens wat fotootjes gemaakt, dus er komen weer een paar blogposts aan.

It’s been a while 🙂 Let’s just say that having a pretty demanding job and going to sewing school at the same time doesn’t leave much time for leisure sewing and blogging. But today I finally took some pics so there are a couple of posts coming up.

Het patroon van dit jurkje bedacht en tekende ik zelf. Het bovenlijfje is wat langer gemaakt waardoor het wat bloest. Iets minder dan dat de bedoeling was, ik zal uitleggen hoe dat komt. Het blijkt dat je stoffen niet alleen voor het verwerken moet strijken om de kreukels eruit te halen, maar ook om eventuele krimp er alvast uit te halen. Wie had dat ooit gedacht… 🙈 Kortom: bij het persen van de naden bleek de stof nogal wat te krimpen in de lengte. Daardoor is zowel het bovenlijfje als de rok wat korter dan bedoeld.

The pattern for this dress is self-drafted. The bodice has a bit of extra length to make it blouse. It blouses less than intended and I’ll tell you why. Turns out that ironing your fabric before cutting it isn’t just to remove wrinkles but also to prevent it from shrinking after you’ve cut it. Who would’ve thought… 🙈 When I pressed the seams, the fabric shrunk in lenght, and so both bodice and skirt are shorter than I planned.

Yup, it also made the bust dart sit too high.

Gelukkig is het nog wel een draagbaar geheel. Ik vind de stof heel leuk, een crêpe met een lengtestreepje. Draagt ook heerlijk. De hals en de zoom zijn met een biaisbandje afgewerkt en in de taille zit een tunneltje met een elastiek. De zoom is een beetje afgerond, dat leek me een leuk sportief effect zo met de streepjes.

Fortunately it’s still pretty wearable. I really like the fabric, a crepe with a lengthwise stripe. It’s also pretty nice to wear. The neck and hem are finished with bias tape and the waist is elastic in a casing. The hem is rounded a bit, I thought that would give a nice sporty effect with the stripes.

Wat verder nog blijkt is dat zo’n elastieken taille best heel comfortabel draagt. En ik had nog een paar van die wat flutterige stofjes liggen waar ik eigenlijk nooit echt een goed patroon voor had. Dus maakte ik meteen nog een jurkje van hetzelfde patroon. Dit keer met een dunne crêpe met bloemenprint. De stof is net niet doorzichtig, maar wel een heel stuk dunner dan de blauwe met streepjes.

It also turns out that an elasticated waist is very comfortable to wear, and so I made another dress with this pattern. Again in a crepe fabric, a floral one this time, a bit thinner and flowy-er, almost see-through.

Sorry, mijn poseer-skills zijn wel een beetje afgenomen het afgelopen half jaar 😄

Dit keer met een wat langer rokje in een a-lijn. De mouwen zijn ook ietsje langer. Dit is mijn huidige favoriete jurkje. Het draagt zo fijn, en hoeft niet gestreken te worden. Het enige nadeel is dat het door de polyester stof na een dagje dragen echt wel in de was moet.

This time with a slightly longer skirt with more of an a-line. The sleeves are also a bit longer. This is my current favourite dress, it’s very comfortable to wear and doesn’t require ironing. The only downside is that due to the poly fabric, it needs to be washed after every wear.

Hier zie je dat het bovenlijf aan de achterkant wat meer bloest dan aan de voorkant. En dat het stress-eten van de afgelopen tijd toch wel een beetje zichtbaar begint te worden bij mijn buik, haha!

Here you can see that the bodice blouses a bit more in the back than in the front. And that I’ve grown a little stress-eating-induced belly lately, haha!

Ik denk dat er binnenkort (in de rekbaarste zin van het woord) nog een blauwe linnen versie met korte mouwen van dit patroon volgt, misschien wel met een kraagje. Dat vind ik wel echt het leukste van de opleiding, het patroontekenen en alle ideeën die je opdoet en nu dus ook ten uitvoer kan brengen. Nu alleen de tijd nog, maar is dat niet het probleem van alle naaisters?

I also have a blue linnen short-sleeved version of this pattern planned (in the loosest sense of the word), with a collar and a button placket perhaps. Pattern making is without a doubt my favourite part of what we’re learning at school: all the posibilities and inspiration, and learning how to turn it into reality. The only thing missing is the time to do it all, but isn’t that every sewist’s problem?

Sewcialists TNT month: Knipmode jan 17 dress 24

Het is deze maand TNT-maand bij de Sewcialists. TNT staat voor ‘Tried ’n true’, dus zeg maar een patroon dat je eerder gemaakt en eventueel aangepast hebt zodat het nu precies past zoals je wilt. Een patroon dat je zo uit de losse pols kunt maken dus, zonder onaangename pasvorm-verrassingen.

It’s TNT month at the Sewcialists. TNT means ‘tried ’n true’, a TNT pattern is basically a pattern that you’ve made before and adjusted where neccesary so that you can now make it again and again without nasty fit surprises.

Eén van de patronen die ik zo heb aangepast is jurk 24 uit het januarinummer van de Knipmode. Dat aanpassen was nogal een zware bevalling want de pasvorm was totaal niet goed voor mijn lijf. Maar ik vond de halslijn zo gaaf, en ik hou ook wel van de puzzel om het goed te krijgen. En uiteindelijk is het nu min of meer goed. Voor deze jurk verlengde ik de mouwen en de rok, en maakte de zijnaden van de rok een beetje gerend. Wat dat is natuurlijk ook één van de voordelen van een TNT patroon: door kleine details aan te passen krijg je een ander effect.

One of the patterns that became a TNT for me is dress 24 from the january issue of Knipmode. Adjusting this pattern was no picnick, the fit was totally wrong for my body. But I really liked the neckline, and I love a fitting puzzle, so I soldiered on. For this version I lengthened the sleeves to full length and the skirt to kneelength. I also slightly flared out the skirt. That’s another benefit of a TNT pattern: change a few details and your garments gets a different look.

De stof is een crepe jersey, denk ik. Ik weet niet zeker of het een echte jersey is of meer een scuba. Het is heel glad van binnen, en ik was een beetje bang dat dat niet heel lekker zou dragen, maar het zit juist heerlijk. Door de gladde binnenkant valt het ook mooi soepel.

Ik denk dat ik de rok tussen de taille en heupen nog een heel klein beetje inneem, daar zit wat te veel ruimte.

The fabric is a crepe jersey, I think. I’m not sure it’s a jersey or a scuba. It’s slippery on the wrong side and I wasn’t sure how nice that would be to wear, but it turns out it’s quite comfy. The slippery inside makes it drape really well, too.

I think I’ll take it in a bit between the waist and the hip as there’s a bit much room there.

De kraag is nog steeds mijn favoriete onderdeel van dit patroon. Het is een soort sjaalkraag die uitloopt in een figuurnaad die je niet dichtstikt. Klinkt dat een beetje logisch? Ik weet niet zo goed hoe ik het anders moet omschrijven.

The collar is still my favourite part of this pattern. It’s basically a shawl collar that connects to a shoulder dart that you don’t sew up. Does that make sense? I don’t know how to describe it differently.

Ik ben echt fan van middenachternaden, zoveel makkelijker om een goede pasvorm te krijgen aan de achterkant. Het lijkt alsof er nog een beetje teveel lengte in het achterpand zit maar dat komt denk ik door mijn houding op deze foto en doordat de stof een beetje gekreukeld is door het dragen. Oke, misschien ook door het in een hoopje op de grond naast het bed liggen 🙈

I’m a big fan of center back seams, they make fitting the back so much easier. It looks like there’s a little too much length in the back in this picture, but that’s not the case. I think it’s because of my posture here and because the fabric is a bit wrinkled through wearing. Ok, and maybe because it has been laying in a pile at the floor in my bedroom 🙈

Toaster sweater dress

Het is geen geheim dat ik gek ben op pyjamas. En dan vooral pyjamadagen. En bij pyjamas geldt eigenlijk: hoe lelijker en/of fouter, hoe beter. Maar toen laatst de bezorger van onze favoriete eten-bestel-tent raar opkeek toen ik voor een keer in echte kleren de deur open deed, bedacht ik me dat het misschien tijd werd om wat nettere chill-kleren te maken.

It’s not a secret that I’m a big fan of pajamas. Especially pajama-days. And with pajamas, it’s the uglier the better. But when the delivery guy of our favorite food-delivery-place was visibly suprised when I opened the door in real, proper clothes, I figured it may be time to make some better looking lounge clothes.

Dit is mijn wazige ‘ik heb nog niet genoeg koffie gehad hiervoor’-blik. Gelukkig gaat het daar niet om, maar om de jurk. Een heerlijk warme chill-jurk! De stof is een lekker warme, zachte reliëf jersey. Niet dat je dat ziet op deze foto, haha. Oh zwart, waarom ben je zo lastig te fotograferen?

This is my fuzzy ‘I haven’t had enough coffee for this yet’-look. But hey, it’s about the dress right? It’s a cozy, warm lounge dress! Made from a soft textured knit. Not that you can see it in this pic though. Oh black, why are you so hard to photograph?

Nog steeds niet genoeg koffie, wel een duidelijkere print 🙂 / still not enough coffee, but a clearer view of the texture 🙂

Als uitgangspunt gebruikte ik het patroon van de Toaster sweater van Sew House 7, versie 1. De raglan mouwen en de col spraken me erg aan. Omdat ik niet een al te oversized jurk wilde nam ik een maatje kleiner dan de maattabel aangaf, een S. Vervolgens verlengde ik het patroon. Dit keer deed ik dat eens niet op de gok. Bij de costumière-opleiding die ik doe zijn onze maten opgenomen. Die maten nam ik als uitgangspunt voor de ruglengte, heuphoogte e.d. Vanaf de taille voegde ik wijdte toe voor de heup en na de heup versmalde ik de rok weer iets zodat de onderkant precies zo breed was als de originele onderkant van maat M, zodat ik de heupband van die maat kon gebruiken. Daarnaast voegde ik een naad toe op de middenachter, zodat ik de achterkant wat nauwsluitender kon maken.

As starting point I used the Toaster sweater from Sew House 7, version 1. The raglan sleeves and cowl appealed to me. I didn’t want the dress to be too oversized so I sized down to an S instead of the recommended M. Then I lengthened the pattern. Instead of just winging it, I measured this time. At sewing school all of our measurements were taken recently so I used the back length and hip height etc. of those. From the waist down I added width for the hips and below the hips I pegged the skirt to the width at original length of size M, so I could use the hip band of that size. I also added a center back seam so I could make the back a bit more fitted.

Uiteindelijk heb ik hem nog wat ingenomen bij de heupen en de rug dus mooi aansluitend gemaakt. Hij is nu precies zoals ik in gedachten had, hoera! Het enige dat er nu nog een beetje jammer is, is dat de col een beetje floppy is. De stof is niet stevig genoeg om ‘m rechtop te laten staan. Oh well. De mouwen zijn te lang maar dat vind ik eigenlijk wel lekker voor een chilljurk. Je ziet in deze foto nog nét een stukje van de heerlijke fluffy sokken die ik aanhad. Want wat is een chilljurk zonder fluffy sokken?

In the end I took it in slightly at the hips and fitted the back. It’s now exactly as I envisioned, yay! The only sad part is the floppy collar. My fabric doesn’t have enough body to make it stand up. Oh well. The sleeves are too long but I like that for a lounge dress. You can just see a bit of the fluffy socks I wore. After all, what is a lounge dress without fluffy socks right?

Is dit blijdschap of juist weer teveel koffie? Misschien wel een beetje van beide, we zullen het nooit weten 😉

Is this happiness or too mcuh coffee? Maybe a bit of both, we’ll never know 🙂

Jungle… october?

Nog eentje in de categorie ‘patronen die ik al vaak maakte’: de Rachel wrap dress van Maria Denmark. Dit keer in een dikke wintertricot. Met panterprint. Dat is wel een beetje uit mijn comfortzone, stijltechnisch, maar hé, het schijnt dat daar the magic happens.

Another one from the category ‘patterns I have used many times before’: the Rachel wrap dress by Maria Denmark. This time in a cozy double knit. In panther print. It’s a bit out of my comfortzone, style-wise, but isn’t that where they say the magic happens?

Omdat deze stof niet in de lengte rekt heb ik een centimeter extra lengte toegevoegd aan het lijfje. Daardoor zit de overslag nu een beetje laag en is dit wel echt een jurkje geworden om een hemdje onder te dragen. Ik geloof dat ik ook een halve centimeter extra aanknipte bij de zijnaden en de mouwnaden, omdat de stof wat minder rekt dan dunnere tricots.

Because this fabric has no lenghtwise stretch, I added a centimetre of length to the bodice. That made the crossover point a bit low so this is definately a dress to wear a camisole under. If I remember correctly, I also cut an extra half centimetres to both the side seams and the sleeve seams, because this fabric has slightly less stretch than thinner jerseys.

Zei ik al dat het een ontzettend lekker zacht stofje is? En lekker warm voor in de winter, met de lange mouwen ook.

Did I say that this is a very soft and cozy fabric? And nice and warm for the winter, with the long sleeves.

In het achterpand maakte ik twee kleine figuurnaadjes omdat er daar een beetje teveel stof zat. Ik denk dat ik eigenlijk een centimeter of twee lengte weg zou moeten halen, maar ja dat gaat natuurlijk niet meer als je jurk al helemaal in elkaar zit.

The back has two small darts added, because there was a bit of fabric pooling. I think I need to do a swayback adjustment of about two centimetre, but that’s impossible to do as an afterthought.

De laatste tijd ben ik erg into donkeroranje/brique en die kleur komt in deze stof ook terug. Anders had ik ‘m denk ik niet gekocht. De beige ondergrond is namelijk niet een kleur waar ik heel wild van word. Of het echt ‘magic’ is, deze jurk, daar ben ik nog niet helemaal over uit. Hij zit in ieder geval wel heel lekker! Ik ben benieuwd of hij vaak uit de kast gaat komen straks als het kouder is.

Lately I’ve been drawn to dark/burnt orange and that’s the thing that drew me to this fabric. I don’t think I would have bought it otherwise. The beige underground is not a colour that I’m wild about. Wheter this dress is ‘magic’ or not remains to be seen. It’s very comfortable, that’s for sure! I’m curious if it will get a lot of wear when the colder weather arrives.

Burda september ’17, dress 116, take 2

In het vorige bericht vertelde ik al dat ik een tweede versie van het patroon had gemaakt. Dat is deze dus 🙂

As I said in the last post, I made another version of this pattern. Well, here it is 🙂

De stof is een stretch denim met een heel licht zilverkleurig printje. Ik heb de hals voor een beetje uitgediept, twee coupenaadjes in de hals van het achterpand gemaakt en verder de aanpassingen gedaan waar ik in de vorige post over vertelde: de coupenaden in het achterpand van de rok aangepast en de coupenaad in het bovenlijfje afgeknipt en afgelockt zodat de taillenaad niet zo lomp is. Resultaat: een perfecte jurk. Al zeg ik het zelf 😎

The fabric is a stretch denim with a subtle silvery print. I lowered the front neckline a bit, added two darts in the back neckline, and made the adjustments I wrote about in my last post: adjusting the darts in the skirt back and cutting off the outtake of the front darts to reduce bulk in the waist seam. Result: a perfect dress. If I may say so 😎

Het achter- en zij-aanzicht. Ik ben zó blij met deze jurk, alles eraan is 😍. Behalve misschien de armsgaten, die zitten een heel klein tikkeltje hoog, maar die kan ik nog makkelijk even uitdiepen.

The back and side view. I’m so happy with this dress, everything about it is just 😍. Except maybe the underarm seam, which is ever so slightly high. But that’s easy to adjust.

Sorry voor de dames zo pontificaal in beeld, maar hier zie je de zilveren print op de stof het beste.

I used the selvedge in the vent, because I like funny little details like that.

Burda september ’17, dress 116

Na de goede ervaring die ik had met de jurk uit de Burda van augustus besloot ik om wat vaker dingen uit de Burda te proberen. In het septembernummer stonden een paar patronen die me wel aanspraken, en dit was er eentje van, jurk #116.

After the positive experience with the dress with all the darts from the august issue, I decided to try some more patterns from Burda magazines. The september issue had a few patterns that spoke to me, and this was one of them, dress #116.

Ik heb al een hele tijd een aantal stretch stoffen in mijn voorraad, maar ik vond er nooit echt een geschikt patroon voor. Dit leek me nou precies een patroon voor stretch stoffen. De gekruiste banden liet ik eraf, die vind ik niet zo mooi.

This seemed like a perfect pattern for those stretch woven fabrics I have in my stash but didn’t know which pattern to use with. I left off the ties, because I dont’t like them.

Als eerste gebruikte ik een lichte stretch denim. Ik kocht deze voor een skinny jeans maar bij nader inzien had ik geen idee wat ik daar op zou dragen. Dit is een maat 38 met twee FBA’s: een kleine full bust adjustment en een full butt adjustment. Ook verhoogde ik de oksel met 1.5 centimeter en versmalde ik de mouw wat. Tijdens het maken nam ik nog wat wijdte uit de bovenkant van het rugpand weg en verlengde ik de coupenaden van het achterpand van de rok wat.

First I used this light weight stretch denim. I bought it with the intention to make skinny jeans but I had no idea what I would pair those with, and so it became a dress. It’s a size 38 with two FBA’s: a smal full bust adjustment and a full butt adjustment. I also raised the armhole seam 1.5 centimetre and slimmed down the sleeve a bit. During construction I took out some width from the top of the back bodice and lengthened the back darts in the skirt.

De pasvorm is dikke prima. Ik ben vooral heel blij met hoe de mouwen en het armsgat zitten. De mouw is tweedelig en dat draagt fijn, je ziet gewoon een kleine kromming in de mouw als de jurk op een hangertje hangt. De coupenaden in de rok zijn nog niet helemaal je van het, maar dat heb ik bij een tweede versie van dit patroon verder aangepast en die zijn nu ook goed. De coupenaden bij de buste zijn best groot, en samen met de stof van de plooi in de rok geeft dat een vrij lompe taillenaad. Bij de volgende versie heb ik de coupenaad afgeknipt en gelockt en dat lijkt een stuk mooier.

The fit is pretty nice. I really like the sleeve/armhole fit. This is a two-piece sleeve, you can see the curve in the sleeve when the dress just hangs on a hanger. The darts in the skirt need a bit of work, but I’ve changed them in a second version of this dress and they are fine now too. The bust darts are quite big, and together with the fabric from the pleats in the skirt it makes for a bulky waist seam. In the second version of this dress I cut off the dart outtake and overlocked it, which looks much better.

Maar goed, voor een proefversie is dit toch een prima draagbaar exemplaar. Ik heb ‘m al een paar keer gedragen en er veel complimenten over gekregen. Door de stretch in de stof is het een een heel comfortabel jurkje. Met de aanpassingen die ik na deze versie deed heb ik nu een TNT (Tried and True) patroon voor stretch jurken, dus kan ik eindelijk ook aan dat deel van mijn stoffenvoorraad beginnen. Mooi op tijd voor de TNT-maand van de Sewcialists 🎉

But, all in all, this is a perfectly wearable muslin. I’ve worn it a couple of times already and received a lot of compliments on it. The stretch in the fabric makes it a very comfortable dress as well. So after adjusting the pattern I now finally have a TNT pattern for stretch wovens, which means I can finally sew up that part of the stash. Just in time for TNT-month of the Sewcialists 🎉

Another Aldaia

In mijn stoffenvoorraad heb ik nog een stukje nepleer liggen. Ik stel me zo voor dat een Aldaia jurk van zwarte punto di Roma, met een kwart cirkel rok en een middenvoor stuk van dat nepleer heel gaaf is. Maar voordat ik in mijn geliefde nepleer (cq. plastic :)) ga knippen wilde ik eerst nog even kijken of het patroon goed past. De wikkelversie was prima, maar die is toch wat vergevender qua pasvorm. Ik had nog een stuk jaquard tricot liggen waar ik nog geen bestemming voor had, en deze versie van de Aldaia jurk was geboren.

In my stash is a piece of really nice pleather. I imagine a black ponte Aldaia dress with a quarter circle skirt and the center front panel from that pleather. But before I cut into it I wanted to test the fit of the bodice. I made the wrap version and it was good, but the wrap is a bit more forgiving in fit. I had some jaquard knit laying around and so this Aldaia dress was born.

Met deze (onder andere) rood-geel-zwarte jurk kan ik mooi de Duitse of de Belgische mannen aanmoedigen bij het WK volgend jaar, want het NL mannenelftal heeft het mooi verprutst. Van Oranjekoorts naar Mannengriep 🙂

With this (among others) red-yellow-black dress I can support the German or Belgian gents during the World Championship soccer next year, because the Dutch men really messed up. From Orange fever to man flu 🙂

De jurk zit prima. Ik denk dat ik voor de versie met het nepleer wel wat extra naad bij de prinsessennaad in het voorpand aanknip, voor de zekerheid. Het nepleer heeft wel een beetje stretch maar natuurlijk niet zoveel als tricot. Ook ga ik twee centimeter lengte aan het voorpand toevoegen ter hoogte van de buste. Voor de rest is het goed zoals het is.

The fit is fine. I think that for the version with the pleather I’ll cut a bit extra seam allowance at the front princess seam. The pleather has some stretch but not as much as this jersey. I’ll also add about two centimetres of length to the front bodice. Other than that, it’s good.
